Why read the NY Times:

>>Rock critic Jon "I've-seen-the-future-of-rock-and-roll-and-his-name-is-Bruce-Springsteen" Pareles finally said what I thought I was thinking.
>>MBAs should (and will) study Craig Newmark. 10 million unique visitors each month. 120 cities in 25 countries. 2.4 billion pageviews a month. 99.2% advertising free. 18 employees. And, people overwhelmingly like his product.

Rumor has it that a certain online
auction house (a.k.a., my new boss) wants to make Craig say "You are!" in response to the question: "Who's your daddy?"

Seems logical.

And I thought I was the only one who thought Coldplay was insipid...

I hated Nirvana, too.

Yeah, I said it....

Looks like Mr. Pareles isn't alone:

"“[I]t has to be said quite a few find Coldplay insufferable.” -- Evening Standard

“I hate Coldplay…Such unmitigated gloom is purpose-made for raising the suicide rate. It ought to carry a warning, like cigarettes.” -- The Daily Telegraph

Melancholy Arena Rock; Why is Coldplay still depressed? “[T]he conceit...grows increasingly difficult to stomach.” -- Slate

(Fine, but I still like that "Clocks" song. Sue me.)

Love Coldplay or hate 'em, I've just never been able to regard the opinions of music critics or film critics as being in any way superior or more inspired or for that matter, any better informed, than my own. Maybe I just have a colossal ego---I'll certainly cop to that.

But I have a friend who gets all giddy when he sees an "Austin Chronicle" critic at a concert. He's very big on using the word "respect" in connection with people like that, and I just say, "But he just works for the 'Chronicle'--how good could he really be if he's still here in Austin at a piddling little outfit like that?"
