My block: 10pm

"Red Door"

Three months ago, this door was not red. Two months ago, a film crew shot here. Tonight, the door is red.

A friend of mine who lives in Silverlake had her house rented out by a film company. She had to move out for 45 days. When they were done, part of the deal was they had to paint the house, inside and out, whatever color she wanted. She too, now has a red door. I love that!

In my old neighborhood an eccentric rich woman owned several rental properties, but then decided to buy the house directly across the street from the one she lived in. This new house was larger.

And so for years she and her kids flit back and forth across the street between the two houses.

After she bought the new one she build an iron fence around the front yard, brought in an army of laborers, and installed thousands of dollars of plantings in less than a week in a spot that had just been pristine turf.

And every few months she has her front door painted a different color, I guess to correspond with either the seasons or her decorating scheme. (I assumne she has the door repainted. Either that or she has a collection of doors and gets one taken down and another installed at whim.)

The last time I went by there she'd painted the body of the door one color and the panels another.

Oh, and I should mention this is a 2 1/2 story house with a gabled roof. The gable end that faced my old apartment had a porch on the 1st floor, a chimney with a window on either side on the 2nd, and on the attic level the chimney and 2 half-fan lights. It looked like the "Amityville Horror" house, especially when the lady bathed the exterior in red lights at Christmas.

And a few blocks away was a decaying old Spanish house occupied by an eccentric old man who hoarded stuff. I always called that the "Ramon Navarro House," because it looked like the sort of place an old silent movie actor would live in and get beaten to death in by rough rent boys.

Damn, I must've been really tired when I made that last post. Lots of typos.
