Chris Whitley (1960-2005)

When someone dies, the best words are always said by the ones closest. Here are a few about Chris Whitley.

Kurt Cobain on MTV Unplugged. Robert Johnson at the crossroads. Iggy Pop onstage. Chris Whitley was.

"Indian Summer" (off Dirt Floor)

"Radar" featuring Dave Matthews (off Rocket House)

"Big Sky Country/Gasket" (off Live At Martyrs)

Fair enough. Rocket house is my least favorite ... and least like the other Whitley albums. I suggest either Dirt Floor or Live At Martyrs.

Bah...Rocket House is one of my favorites...I love DJ Logic's flavor on it.

His passing is a shame, but at least we'll be able to enjoy one more of his records. His last album (Reiter In) is coming out later this month. I payed a lot for an import, but you can hear some of it on www.redparlor.com It's amazing, definitely one of his best. It's too bad it will be his last record, but at least Chris was able to accomplish a lot while he was here.

Chris Whitley was a maverick when it came to his music. Each release was different in sound and style. The excitement of not knowing what style to expect was something I enjoyed. His lyrics were just as important as was the music itself. I think it's great that he was not afraid to change. I can name numerous bands that need to change, just a little would be nice. There is also a whole list of music where he is a contributing artist. Anyway, Chris will be missed.
