Why isn't anyone writing great protest songs?

Write something, then define what it means. As opposed to, think about what it should mean and then write it.

James McMurtry's heart is in the right place, just not sure this song gets there.

BTW: McMurtry's one of my favorites in this realm, on the heels of Steve Earle. Bob Dylan, in recent years, is one of my biggest disappointments, on the heels on me.

I remember back in the faraways eighties, when I was actually conservative Republican (and before you jump on my ass--I'm not that way anymore--I refer to myself as a "recovering Republican")--I knew a guy in college, a half-deaf dude from New Jersey (I still owe him about $400), who said his goal was to become a protest singer like Bob Dylan. I thought that was the silliest thing I'd ever heard. What market would there in Reagan's America now or ever again for such a thing?

Check out Will Hoge's EP called America. Last i checked he was giving out for free on his website. Best protest songs in a reallly long time, and features a solid Dylan cover too
